Homemade bacon dog treats sure are a treat for our dogs. We try not to give them table scraps so this is probably the closest they get of it. And of course they cannot get enough of it!

I originally made these dog biscuits using leftover prime rib meat from our dinner. Talk about prime table scraps! But of course, it’s not everyday you have leftover prime rib in the fridge so I tested these again using bacon instead.

Ingredients and substitutions

As always, you’ll find the complete list of ingredients and quantities in the recipe card at the end of this post. Below are some notes and substitution tips for each ingredient:

  1. Bacon – I used 2 slices of bacon in this recipe. Once cooked, both the bacon bits and rendered fat are used in the dough. If you’re using a different kind of meat or leaner bacon like turkey bacon, you can add extra fat to your recipe using oil or peanut butter.
  1. Flour – I used whole wheat flour in this recipe. Regular all-purpose flour or all-purpose gluten free baking flour will also work. 
  1. Stock – Chicken stock, beef stock, vegetable stock, homemade or store bought will all work in this recipe. If you don’t have stock, you could just use water or even canned pumpkin.
  1. Egg – I used one egg to bind everything together.

Tools you’ll need

  • A cast iron skillet to fry the bacon in but any frying pan will work.
  • A mixing bowl with a whisk and spatula or a wooden spoon to mix the dough.
  • A rolling pin to roll out the dough.
  • A bone shaped cookie cutter to cut out cute treats or simply slice the dough into squares or rectangles.
  • A baking sheet to bake the treats on. You don’t need parchment paper since these treats shouldn’t stick.

How to make bacon dog treats

The following instructions, step by step photos and tips are here to help you visualize how to make the recipe. You can always skip straight to the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

First, cut the bacon into small bits and fry over medium to medium low heat until crispy. You will use both the bacon bits and the bacon fat so transfer the bacon bits to a plate and the bacon fat to a mixing bowl, and allow them to cool.

Tip: this yields about 2 tablespoons of bacon fat (21 g) and less than ¼ cup of bacon bits (16 g). You can use these measurements to substitute other proteins and fats.

Beat together cooled bacon fat, egg and stock. Fold in the whole wheat flour along with the bacon bits and knead until a dough forms.

Tip: any salt free stock will work in this recipe, but you can also use water if you don’t have any stock on hand. Pumpkin purée will also work since it is about 94% water.

Roll the dough out to about ¼” thick. Cut with a cookie cutter if desired, or simply cut into squares with a knife.

Place the treats on a baking sheet about ½” apart, and bake for 20 minutes at 350°F. Flip the treats over and rotate the baking pan and continue baking for another 20 to 30 minutes at 300°F.

More baker’s tips

  • The amount of treats you’ll get from this recipe depends on the shape and size of your cookie cutters. I use a 2” bone shape cutter which yields about 22 treats.
  • The size of your treats will dictate how long or short you’ll need to bake them. For larger treats, bake them longer at lower oven temperature so they can properly dry out without burning. 
  • If you have leftover bacon from breakfast, you can use 2 slices of cooked bacon in this recipe along with 2 tablespoons of oil to substitute the missing bacon fat.

Storage

Store these bacon dog treats in a clean jar or an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.You can also freeze them for up to 6 months.

I don’t recommend keeping these treats at room temperature since they contain bacon in them.

Ingredients 

  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup stock (chicken, beef, vegetable, or water, 59 g)
  • 2 bacon slices (66 g)
  • 1 ¼ cup whole wheat flour (162 g)
  • Extra flour for rolling

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Cut bacon slices into small bits and fry in a cast iron skillet over medium to medium low heat until crispy. Transfer the bacon bits to a plate and allow it to cool. Reserve the bacon fat and transfer it to a medium mixing bowl to cool slightly.
  • To the cooled bacon fat, add egg and stock and beat until smooth. Fold in the whole wheat flour along with the bacon bits and knead until a dough forms.
  • Roll the dough out to about ¼” thick on a floured countertop. Cut into small cookies using a 2” bone shaped cookie cutter. Reroll the scraps and continue cutting until the dough is all gone.
  • Place treats on a baking sheet between ½” to 1” apart. Bake for 20 minutes. Rotate pan, flip treats, reduce oven temperature to 300°F and bake for another 20-30 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on the baking sheet set on top of a wire rack.
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • Cooked bacon will yield about 2 tablespoons of bacon fat (21 g) and less than ¼ cup of bacon bits (16 g). Use these measurements to substitute ground chicken, turkey or other chopped up cooked meat and oil if desired.
  • The amount of treats you’ll get from this recipe depends on the size of your cookie cutter. I use a 2” bone shaped cutter.
  • For larger treats, bake them longer at lower oven temperature so they can properly dry out without burning.
