Strawberry Dog Treats

Take some time and make these Strawberry Dog Treats for your little (or big) fur balls. These treats are made with fresh AND freeze dried strawberry for a big punch of flavor that will get their noses sniffing.
It wouldn’t be fair for us human to enjoy all the spring berry treats by ourselves. So today I’m sharing these Strawberry Dog Treats to let our fur babies join in all the fun. Like these Peanut Butter Apple Dog Treats, I used oat flour in this recipe, but I added some whole wheat flour to soak up the extra water in the pureed strawberries. Strawberry contains 92% water while apple only contains 81% to 84% water, you will be able to tell the difference when you mix the dough. If you want to keep it grain free, just add more oat flour instead of whole wheat flour, you may need to add quite a bit more to get to the same dough texture.

I love the addition of freeze dried strawberry in these strawberry dog treats, it packs a good punch of strawberry flavor or should I say aroma since I didn’t actually eat them. Although I considered trying one since they smell so good! Every time I open the jar to get my dog a treat, it makes me happy to take a whiff of that strawberry scent. If you don’t want to go out and buy freeze dried strawberries just for these treats, you can omit the ingredient. However, I highly recommend it, plus you can always add them as toppings to smoothie or oatmeal. I doubt the left over will go to waste.

Again, the ingredients and methods for making these treats are very simple and can be altered easily to accommodate any restricted diet your dogs may be on, unless they’re allergic to strawberries… In that case, we have a whole bunch of other dog treat recipes in the archive for you to choose from ???? Ingredients

• ▢ 1 cup chopped strawberry - pureed
• ▢ 1 large egg
• ▢ 1 tablespoon honey
• ▢ ½ cup freeze dried strawberry
• ▢ 2 cup oat flour
• ▢ ¼ cup whole wheat flour
• ▢ Extra flour for rolling

Instructions

• Preheat oven to 325°F.
• Ground approximately 8 oz of rolled oats in a food processor until coarse flour forms. This will yield just about 2 cups.
• Break up the freeze dried strawberries with your hand into tiny pieces and mix with the oat flour. Set aside.
• Wash and hull the fresh strawberries, chop and measure 1 cup, puree in a food processor, this will yield approximately ½ cup.
• Add pureed strawberries, egg, 1 tablespoon of honey to a medium mixing bowl. Mix with a whisk until smooth.
• Add oat flour with freeze dried strawberries to the mixture. Use a spatula or mixing spoon to combine.
• At this point, the dough will be slightly wet. Incorporate whole wheat flour, a little at a time up to ¼ cup, until the dough is dry enough to handle.
• Sprinkle some more flour on a cutting board or counter and turn the dough out, knead and shape into a disk.
• Roll dough out to about ¼" thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutter large enough for your dog, and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet about ½” apart.
• Reshape scraps and roll out again to ¼” thick and continue cutting out treats until finished.
• Dip the cookie cutter in some flour each time you cut so the cutter doesn’t get sticky.
• Bake for 50 minutes to an hour, flip treats upside down and rotate pan half way through baking time so they can brown evenly.
• Remove baking pan from oven and let cool on a cooling rack.

Notes

1. I used a 1.5” heart shape cookie cutter and a 2” bone shape cookie cutter for this recipe and it yielded 43 treats combined.
2. Store in an airtight container. If the treats are baked until they really dry out, they could last at room temperature for a week plus. By this time, these will be all gone at my house. But you can always store them in the fridge for longer.
3. If you don’t want to use whole wheat flour, substitute with more oat flour. You may need to add a lot more than ¼ cup, until the dough is dry enough to handle.
